City Receives 16th Financial Reporting Award

PORTSMOUTH – The City of Portsmouth has been awarded its 16th  “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” for the annual Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the year ending June 30, 2008, City Manager John Bohenko announced Wednesday.

The CAFR is prepared following the end of each fiscal year under the guidance of Finance Director Judie Belanger. In order to receive a Certificate of Achievement from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), government units must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized Comprehensive Annual Financial Report that conforms to program standards and applicable legal requirements.

“We are very proud to once again receive this prestigious designation,” the City Manager said. “It is another welcome affirmation of the City’s continuing efforts to ensure our financial reporting meets nationally recognized guidelines in providing this important information to our citizens as part of our mission to maintain financial transparency in city government.” 

The GFOA also recently presented the City of Portsmouth with its third Distinguished Budget Document Presentation Award for its proposed 2009 budget document. Portsmouth remains the first and still the only local, county or state government in New Hampshire to receive this national award. 

“These financial reporting awards recognize our efforts to meet and exceed national standards under the leadership of the City Council and City Manager Bohenko,” said Belanger. “Preparing these reports requires a great deal of hard work by City staff but we believe it is essential that our residents be kept informed about the financial health of our City.”
