DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Library Assistant I performs a range of departmental tasks and provides a range of library services to patrons in the Circulation area of the library. This position is vital in creating a welcoming, warm and respectful environment and is almost entirely a customer-facing position.
Using the library’s integrated system software, the LAI checks in and out library materials, registers new patrons and renews records, answers patron questions, places holds for items and more; assists patrons with the use of technology tools including public computers, self-check stations, the library website and copier; assists patrons in locating relevant print and other materials to meet their needs; assists with collection maintenance including keeping collections and displays neat, clean and well organized; keep usage statistics on a daily basis; implements library policies, rules and procedures and assists in their evaluation for effectiveness, efficiency and contribution to customer service; answer phone calls.
QUALIFICATIONS: Evidence of ability to provide a high level of service to customers. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people including good listening skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with customers, co-workers, employees in other municipal departments and City officials. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing skills development and the judgment and public relations skills to deal appropriately with people. Candidates should have a proficiency using a variety of information technology tools; knowledge of Windows operating systems and basic information troubleshooting techniques. Familiarity with social media and handheld devices is a plus.
Candidates must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED) and must have a demonstrated interest in library or related customer service work. They should have familiarity with office productivity software and a demonstrated ability to use computers, the Internet, and some mobile technologies.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION:
Competitive Examination which includes a personal interview
Finalist must complete pre-employment screening, drug testing & background check.
