The Portsmouth Police Department Explorer Post received the 2007 Northeast Explorer Post of the Year award on Saturday, March 1st at an awards ceremony held in Connecticut. The northeast region is comprised of eight states that includes New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
Portsmouth Explorer Post Coordinator Detective Robert Munson also received the Director’s award for the Post’s ‘Can ID’ program (see related press release for details of the ‘Can ID’ program). Det. Munson serves as the School Resource Officer at Portsmouth High School in addition to his role as the coordinator of the Portsmouth Explorers.
The Explorers volunteer during police and community events, receive classroom and hands-on instruction from Portsmouth Police Officers, and participate in camping and outdoor team building trips. The post is open to teenagers who are interested in learning more about law enforcement.
The Portsmouth Explorers are now working toward competing at the national level.
From July 21-26, 2008, the national Explorers competition will be held at Colorado State University. The Portsmouth Explorers hope to send eight cadets with two advisors to compete at the nationals.
Anyone interested in donating to the Explorers, or to learn more about the program is asked to contact Detective Robert Munson at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call him at 610-7506.
