Date of Release: July 2, 2008
Reference: Increased downtown patrols
The Portsmouth Police Department has implemented a summer plan that reallocates resources, namely plain clothed detectives, in order to have a greater presence in the downtown area. The City of Portsmouth has over 130 outlets that sell alcohol, inclusive of bars, restaurants and stores. This is the highest per capita in the state. Alcohol related calls for service for the Portsmouth Police Department dramatically increase in the summer months, specifically in the downtown area on weekend nights.
In an effort to keep the downtown area safe for all residents and visitors, there will be a zero tolerance stance on alcohol related offenses. This includes disorderly conduct, open containers and urinating in public, in addition to drunken driving.
The public is urged to call the Portsmouth Police Department when these or any other crimes are occurring. Callers can remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers at 431-1199 or their website www.seacoastcrimestoppers.org
