Chief Michael Magnant and the Portsmouth Police Commission announce that on Thursday evening August 14th, 2008 the Police Commission voted unanimously to promote Lt. Tim Brownell to the rank of Captain in the Bureau of Investigative Services. This promotion is effective October 13th, 2008 when he will assume duties as the commander of the department’s Bureau of Investigative Services.
Lt. Brownell brings 26 years of law enforcement experience to his new position. He began his career at the Portsmouth Police Department in January 1989. He was previously employed for more than five years as a Deputy Sheriff in Gainesville, Florida and for one year as a part-time police officer in Lake George, New York.
He has served as the Lieutenant in the Bureau of Investigative Services for more than five years and has also served as a Lieutenant and as a Sergeant in the Bureau of Patrol Services. He has acted as the commander of the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force since December 2005 and will continue in that position. Lt. Brownell has also acted as the commander of a statewide operational task force targeting persons collecting and trading child sexual assault images. He had held several other positions while at Portsmouth Police Department, including Officer in Charge and member of the Emergency Response Team, Field Training Sergeant & Field Training Officer, Adjutant to the Deputy Chief, background investigator and as a member of many technical and computer committees.
