News Releases

Date of Release: January 9, 2007
Reference: Juvenile arrest
A juvenile suspect has been identified in connection with the Friday, January 5, 2007 report of the sound of gunshots fired, and the subsequent lock down of the Portsmouth High School.
The juvenile, who is a student at the school, and whose identity will not be released publicly due to his age, was confirmed to be responsible for setting off a series of fireworks on and near school grounds on Friday. The juvenile will be held accountable in Portsmouth Family Court, where proceedings are confidential.
These fireworks were set off near the Portsmouth Pool and along a wooded path adjacent to the Winchester Apartments. Due to the large number of fireworks that were lit, witnesses called the Portsmouth Police Department and reported what they believed to be the sound of gunshots coming from the area of the football field.
Members of the Portsmouth Police Department as well as the Portsmouth School Department responded immediately. In keeping with practiced safety standards that have been approved by the Portsmouth Safe Schools Team, the school was locked down until the threat could be accurately assessed and the safety of the community could be ensured.
There will be no further arrests as a result of this incident.
