Reference: July 7 - July 8, 2006 Sobriety Checkpoints

Portsmouth Police Department, New Hampshire State Police Troop-A and the New Hampshire Liquor Commission continued their aggressive initiative against drunk driving in the seacoast this weekend, when officers led by Chief Magnant of the Portsmouth Police Department and Lieutenant Robert Quinn, Commander of the New Hampshire State Police Troop A, deployed three sobriety checkpoints in the City of Portsmouth over this busy summer weekend. In addition to these checkpoints, officers and troopers on random patrols throughout the City worked to apprehend drunk drivers as well.

On Friday, July 7, Officers from Portsmouth Police and Troopers from NHSP Troop-A were joined by Liquor Inspectors, Rockingham County Sheriffs, Newcastle Police, Stratham Police and Rye Police in sobriety checkpoints at locations on Maplewood Avenue and on Market Street Extension. Representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and County Attorney James Reams were also present to show support for this enforcement effort.

As a result of the July 7 Checkpoints, 639 vehicles were screened by officers. The following individuals were arrested as a result:

On Saturday, July 8, 2006, a checkpoint deployed on the Spaulding Turnpike northbound screened a total of 769 vehicles and resulted in the following arrests:

Random Patrols in the City of Portsmouth conducted by Portsmouth officers and troopers from NHSP Troop A resulted in six (6) additional Driving While Intoxicated arrests. Those individuals are identified as follows:

In only two nights, eighteen (18) drivers were arrested for Driving While Intoxicated in the City of Portsmouth. Several of these arrests were of repeat offenders. Law Enforcement officers will continue to join forces and use every means available to aggressively pursue the apprehension of drunk drivers in the City of Portsmouth and the New Hampshire Seacoast.
