On the nights of July 8, 2005 and July 9, 2005, the Portsmouth Police Department conducted sobriety checkpoints in accordance with a Petition granted from the Rockingham County Superior Court. Officers and equipment from NH State Police, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department, NH State Liquor Commission, and the Dover NH Police Department assisted in this effort. This initiative was funded, in part, by a grant from the NH Highway Safety Agency.
Both Sobriety Checkpoints were conducted between the hours of 10:00 P.M. and 2:00 A.M. The first Checkpoint, conducted on July 8, was located on the Spaulding Turnpike northbound just north of the Portsmouth Traffic Circle. The second Checkpoint, conducted on July 9, was located on Maplewood Avenue by Vaughn St. A total of over five hundred fourteen vehicles were checked at the two checkpoints.
The results are as follows:
Checkpoint 1 - July 8
Arrests:
Driving While Intoxicated
Possession/Transporting Controlled Drugs
Operating After Suspension
Protective Custody
