Press Releases

Reference: Intensive DUI Enforcement
Date of Release: December 9, 2005
In a joint effort to deter the incidence of drunk driving offenses in the Seacoast over the holidays, the Portsmouth Police Department and New Hampshire State Police -Troop A announce that they will join forces in an intensified effort to apprehend DUI violators traveling our roadways.
Portsmouth Police Chief Michael Magnant and NHSP Troop Commander Lieutenant Robert Quinn, in a cooperative effort, will allocate additional "DUI Hunter" patrols throughout this holiday season to Portsmouth streets and highways.
Statistics show that drunk driving is the cause of an alarming number of serious injury and fatal accidents in our State. It is our goal to impress upon potential violators the seriousness of this offense and its potential consequences. We implore those who plan to drink while celebrating the holidays to do so responsibly. Please utilize the services of a cab, limo or plan ahead to have a designated driver. If you do drive drunk, know that there will be troopers and officers looking for you and expect to be arrested. Since January 1, 2005 between the hours of 9PM - 7AM, Portsmouth officers and State troopers from Troop A alone have made almost 500 DUI arrests.
We will make every effort to keep the roadways safe during this holiday season by apprehending those operators who make the wrong choice and drive drunk.
The attached poster will be distributed to local bars and businesses in the downtown with a simple message: "If You Drink and Drive, We'll Provide the Chaser!" Please drink responsibly and allow everyone to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.
For questions/comments regarding increased DUI patrols for the holidays please contact Dep. Chief David Young of the Portsmouth Police Dept. @ 603-610-7402 and/or LT Robert Quinn of NH State Police Troop A @ 603-679-3333.
