Senior Activity Center

Group Empowerment Drumming – Come and join the fun!

We will use a variety of drums including West African, North African, Native American as well as various rhythm making instruments.  We will supply the instruments.
Systematic inquiry into the relationship between music and brain function is one of the most rapidly developing fields of human research. "Music making offers extensive exercise for brain cells and their synapses (connections). It would be difficult to find another activity that engages so many of the brain's systems."(Weinberger, N., 1998)

Walking Group at Community Campus
Every Tuesday
Meet at 9:00am at the rear entrance to Community Campus
Walk will include a shaded walk through well groomed walking trail then down the paved campus drive. Walk should take apx 30-min. Longer walking routes available for those who would like to keep on trekking!

Drop in Art
Every Wednesday 12:00-1:00pm
Each week create a fun take home project. Projects include painting a little bird house and painting a flower scene on canvas. No experience with painting needed, just a fun hour of art.

Free; no reservations needed, just drop in.

Senior Movie Days
The Senior Activity Center will be showing movies on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 11:30am.
Bring your lunch or buy lunch in the cafe. Free. No reservations needed, just show up.

Gentle Yoga with Sherry
Every Wednesday from 10-11am
Senior Activity Center
$5 per class
A yoga class designed just for you! 
Open to all levels, including beginners. This gentle yoga class incorporates traditional postures, moving from seated to kneeling to standing. Modifications are offered for each pose and suggestions made in the use of supportive props, such as blocks, cushions, blankets, a chair or the wall. Each student is encouraged to let their body be their guide. In this class we will:

  • Increase flexibility and gain strength
  • Improve balance and posture
  • Increase range of motion
  • Deepen the breathe, relax and still the mind

Sherry Evans, a senior herself, is a certified yoga teacher in the Classical tradition and has been teaching seniors for several years.  She also teaches a monthly restorative yoga class and all level yoga classes at Gateway Taiji, Qigong and Yoga (Portsmouth, NH). Scrabble with Friends
Every Monday from 1:00-3:00pm
Senior Activity Center
Play Scrabble and Upwords and enjoy the company of others. Several boards will be set up to play. Free – everyone welcome. This is a popular activity…we hope you join us too!

Toe Nail Cutting Clinic
October's Foot Care Clinic date has been rescheduled to accommodate the Columbus Day holiday. Please note the new date is Monday, October 6 from 10:00am-11:00am.

Yarn Works! Knitting Group
Every Thursday from 12:30-2:30pm

Senior Strength & Cardio
Every Monday at 10am

Cost:  $3/class
Active aging group exercise classes are designed to help seniors and older adults maintain their cardiovascular health, strength and flexibility. Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living.
Call to sign up or drop-ins happily accepted.
Friday Café
Join us every Friday from 9:30-11:30am for complimentary Keurig coffee, conversation and congregating. Walking offered at 10am, cards at 10:30am. Our delightful volunteer, Marsha, will entertain you with jokes.

Blue Ribbon Senior Committee Report

In July of 2013, Mayor Eric Spear created a Blue Ribbon Senior Committee with the charge to advise the City Council on developing a Senior Center. The Senior Committee met eight times from August through December 2013 and developed a report and recommendations for the City Council for further review.
