Early Childhood Education Program
Early Childhood Education is a program offered to juniors and seniors at Portsmouth High School through the Career Technical Education Center. It is a two-year program with an opportunity to earn college credit through the Community College System of New Hampshire.
The Early Childhood Education program at Portsmouth High School teaches high school students how to work with children in an educational setting and how to prepare for college and the world of work.
Year 1 and Year 2
The first year of the Early Childhood Education program is career-based. ECE I students complete career units and begin creating professional portfolios and résumés while observing and assisting in the preschool and learning about teaching methods.
In the second year of the program, ECE II students apply their knowledge acquired during the first year of the program. They become more involved in the preschool through collaborating with ECE I students, increasing direct instruction, working with a focus child, coordinating field trips, and planning celebrations.
