Zagster Bike Share Event on Tuesday, March 20th at Street’za
March 20, 2018
On Tuesday, March 20th, the Portsmouth community is invited to join City staff and representatives from the Zagster bike share program at Street’za (801 Islington Street) at 5 p.m. to learn more about growing the City’s bike share program, perks of annual memberships and potential station sponsorship opportunities.
The Zagster program operates similarly to other bike share programs around the country like Hubway in Boston or Citi Bike in New York City. Once a member, users can take as many short (two-hour) trips as they want on a Zagster bike at no extra charge as long as the bike is returned to any of the Zagster stations within two hours. From May 1st to November 27th, 941 people signed up to use the program through one of the various membership types and a total of 1,876 trips were logged with an average of 63 trips per week. Membership and available bikes can be found via the free Zagster Mobile App — available for iPhone and Android — or online at https://bike.zagster.com/portsmouthnh/.
The City has been exploring opportunities for expanding the program further through sponsorship agreements with local businesses. Last year, Zagster bike stations were located at the Memorial Bridge Parking Lot, Bridge Street Parking Lot, corner of Russell Street and Deer Street, corner of Summer Street and Islington Street, on Parrott Avenue at the intersection with Junkins Avenue, and in Market Square behind the North Church. The City has already executed an agreement with the owners of Portwalk Place – who will be sponsoring a new bike station at that location when all stations are re-installed for use on May 1, 2018 – and want to educate other organizations who may have interest in a similar agreement.
“This is a nice opportunity for residents and local businesses alike to converse with representatives, share ideas and gain access to special promotional materials over networking and snacks,” said Planning Director Juliet Walker. “We thought this kick-off event would be a great way to explore how we can further immerse this program into the West End and other new areas of the City, and share annual membership incentives with our residents.”
