Howe Named Portsmouth's Deputy Chief

Fire Department officials on Friday announced the promotion of Fire Inspector Patrick Howe to the position of Deputy Fire Chief and the upcoming retirement of Deputy Carl Roediger.

Howe’s promotion is effective March 1 and he will oversee and administer the department’s fire and life-safety risk- management programs, public education, fire investigations and fire and life safety code enforcement, said Chief Steve Achilles. He was hired in July 1999, served close to 12 years as a firefighter and advanced EMT, before being promoted to Fire Inspector in 2012, the chief said.

Howe’s professional credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Management, graduation from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program, and designation as a Fire Marshal by the Commission on Professional Credentialing. He also holds certifications as a Fire Protection Specialist, Plans Examiner, Investigation Technician, and Fire and Explosion Investigator.

Achilles said Howe has “demonstrated a high level of commitment to both the department and those we serve. We look forward to his continued contributions as a chief officer and a leader.”

The chief also recognized outgoing Deputy Chief Roediger, who has been with the department for over 11 years, first as Fire Inspector, then Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention and Administration. Prior to his employment with the city, Roediger was a 12-year member of the New Castle Fire Department with the last three as its fire chief. He also served 27 years in the Air National Guard and retired in 2003 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

“His contributions and dedication to the Fire Department, as well as the city, will always be valued,” Achilles said.
