10 AM – 4 PM

This free pastel workshop is offered as part of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire (PSNH) Outreach Program with the Portsmouth Public Library. This class is open to Portsmouth Public Library cardholders only. Registration is required. Please call 766-1720 or visit the reference desk to register.

The pastel medium has seen a major renaissance in the last 20 years and has become one of the most popular and satisfying medium used by both beginning and experienced artists. It is a versatile medium that lends itself to painting a variety of subjects with brilliance and immediacy.

This workshop will start with an introduction to materials. You will then learn the process of building a pastel painting from start to finish using a sanded surface for your first “dry” painting. Your second assignment will be to create a “wet” under-painting using hard pastels and rubbing alcohol as the base for your second painting. The focus will be on drawing an outline, choosing color and gradually building pastel layers until the painting is completed.

About the Instructor: Born and raised in Normandy, France, Joelle is mostly a self-taught painter who started painting in watercolor over 25 years ago. Over time she added pastels and oils, which have become her two media of choice for plein air and studio painting. Each medium provides her a different opportunity to capture a subject and moment. Natural elements, plants, fruits and simple daily life vignettes as well as landscapes and buildings of her native France and New England home inspire her. Light, alignment, vibrant color and simplicity catch her eye. Joelle’s work is shown at the Yarmouth Gallery in Yarmouth, Maine, The Fruitlands Museum Store in Harvard, MA, the Sitka Gallery in Fitchburg, MA and the NOA Gallery in Groton, Mass. She is a member of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire, Pastel Society of Maine and Pastel Society of Connecticut. She teaches pastel classes at the Fruitlands Museum and the HUCC facility in Harvard, MA. Contact information: joellefeldman.com
