USS Thresher: Loss & Legacy
Tuesday May 14 | 7 – 8:30 PM
The library’s Local History series features authors and experts on local history topics. The series continues with Kevin Galeaz, Cold War submarine veteran, president of the USS Thresher Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Foundation, and commander of the United States Subarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) Thresher Base.
On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher sank during deep-diving tests about 220 miles east of Boston, killing all 129 crew and shipyard personnel aboard in the deadliest submarine disaster in history. Galeaz will take you through Thresher’s storied history, the tragedy of its sinking, and its legacy as a cautionary tale. Learn about the expedition to survey the wreckage, and how the memories of Thresher’s lost crew are honored to this day.
