Happy Earth Day! Pick up trash and earn library stickers!

April 22, 2022

Earth Day is April 22, and we’re marking the holiday by cleaning up our environment. And you can join us! Pick up trash anywhere in your community, and you’ll earn some free stickers, designed by library staff!

As the snow melts, we’re noticing trash around our neighborhoods and even on library grounds. The garbage we leave behind is not only unsightly, it can harm wildlife, contaminate our water, and even cause accidents on the road. We’re also seeing more and more disposable masks on the ground, which carry both pathogens and micro plastics into the environment.

So for the next two weeks, we’re offering a giveaway! Here’s how to win:

  1. Go outside and pick up some trash – dispose of it in a personal or private receptacle, or recycle it if appropriate.
  2.  Send us a photo of the trash (selfies welcome!) – you can message us directly on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, or drop by the library and show the photo to a member of our staff!
  3. You’ll automatically earn a four-pack of Library Card stickers designed by our very own staff member Stacia! Pick them up at the front desk in the library any time.

It’s important to recognize that our personal waste is just a small part of the larger issues plaguing our Earth. But we know that small solutions add up over time – and that engaging with these solutions helps boost our morale, and empowers us to take further action! If you’d like to help more this Earth Day season, here are just a few ideas:

  • Ask your representatives to support legislation around alternative energy, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and regulating corporate emissions.
  • Research the environmental practices of the companies you buy from.
  • Support local small businesses and farms.
  • Plan this year’s garden to include pollinator-friendly plants.
  • Learn to repair your clothes, or buy second-hand if you’re able.
