As a public safety dispatcher you can work in a warm office, nestled in the center of Portsmouth Police Department, and answer emergency calls for service, protected from natures’ elements. Our center is staffed 24/7 with a minimum of two (2) dispatchers on duty at all times.
The Portsmouth Emergency Communications Center is the true first responder to all emergencies in the City of Portsmouth. Our mission is to act as a vital and critical link between our police, fire, public works personnel, and the citizens they protect and serve. We strive to ensure the preservation of life and property by treating all who use our services with professionalism, courtesy, and compassion and by relaying accurate information in a timely and efficient manner.
We offer on-the-job training consisting of a combination of classroom training and intensive one-on-one “live environment” training with peer observation and guidance. Duties include operating a computer aided dispatch system, multi-line telecommunications and radio communications equipment to receive requests for emergency public safety assistance, determine the type and level of response necessary, accomplish timely and effective dispatch of emergency response units, monitor response and safety of responding units, and retrieve supplemental information from other local, state and federal information systems.
Starting salary for a Portsmouth Public Safety Dispatcher is $43,644.19. We offer a comprehensive benefit package to include medical, vision and dental insurance. You will be required to pass an extensive background check, a polygraph, a psychological and medical examination prior to an offer of full time employment.
