Candidates who pass will be invited to a formal oral board interview. Applicants who participate in an oral board interview are evaluated, scored, and placed on an eligibility list. Candidates selected to move forward will be given a conditional offer of employment.
The next steps include a comprehensive background investigation, a psychological evaluation, a medical examination, and a polygraph examination. It is required that the candidate pass each phase before a final interview with the Chief of Police. As an estimate, the hiring process can take anywhere between 45-90 days, give or take.
All non-certified auxiliary police officer applicants who are selected for part-time employment by the Portsmouth Police Department will be required to attend the next available Part-Time Police Academy Recruitment Class.
