Captain Promotion

On Tuesday, March 15, 2022, the Board of Police Commissioners promoted Lieutenant Chris Cummings to the rank of Captain. His effective date and division of assignment are TBD.

Chris is in his 24th year with the Portsmouth Police Department. He brings 13 years of valuable supervisory experience to his new position. Chris has served in many roles in all three of the department divisions, to include: Field Training Officer, founding member of the Seacoast Emergency Response Team, Motorcycle Officer, Accident Investigation Team member, founding member and current commander of the Drone Team, Elementary School SRO and Family Services Detective, Training Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Statewide Commander of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Patrol Lieutenant and Lieutenant of Strategic Services.  

Chris holds a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Norwich University. He has been married to his wife for 23 years and has a son and daughter. Chris looks forward to implementing his dynamic skillset in the next chapter of his career.
