The Portsmouth School Board has recently completed a first reading of a sustainability policy which will help to further the school system's support for sustainable beliefs and practices.
The City's Conservation Commission has completed a number of inventory efforts looking wetlands, important upland areas, and conservation opportunities. In addition the Commission has increased the protection of wetlands, and is working on improving its stewardship efforts. A number of studies highlight the work that has been done and can be read and downloaded below.

The City of Portsmouth Sustainability Committee believes it is urgent for the community to take transformational action now to safeguard our planet. Recent actions include:
PORTSMOUTH - Portsmouth residents are urged to take advantage of a City program to recycle used cooking oil and grease, which helps the environment and avoids plumbing problems in homes, businesses and the City’s wastewater treatment system.
Rather than dump cooking oil and grease down the sink or toilet, or pouring it into a non-recyclable container to be placed in the weekly trash collection, residents should consider disposing of it in the designated yellow tank at the City’s Recycling Center behind the Public Works Department at 680 Peverly Hill Road.
