Arbor Day Foundation information:
The Department of Public Works Parks & Greenery Division is responsible for caring for the parks, recreational areas and natural environment within city limits. This includes the 10,000+ trees in Portsmouth's urban forest.
The National Arbor Day Foundation has named Portsmouth a Tree City for more than 20 consecutive years, thanks to annual efforts to plant and care for the City's urban forest of more than 15,000 trees.
Goodwin Park and its towering Soldiers and Sailors monument was created in 1888 to honor NH Governor Ichabod Goodwin whose house was located across from the park on Islington Street and is now part of Strawbery Banke Museum.
Haven Park lies between South Mill Pond and Pleasant Street. A notable feature is the life-sized bronze statue (below) of Maj. Gen. Fitz John Porter who was born in the gambrel-roofed house on Livermore Street, adjacent to the park.
