Auxiliary Unit

The Auxiliary Unit is comprised of part-time officers utilized in several different venues. Its primary purpose is to expanded police presence at special events, patrol emergencies such as fire scenes, and work outside road details, enhancing the department's capacity to serve the public. This unit contains retired Police Officers and participants who have attended the part-time Police Academy through the NH Police Standards and Training Council and the Portsmouth field training program, commensurate with their part-time status and responsibilities.

Key Functions of the Auxiliary Unit

  1. Community Engagement:
    1. Participate in public outreach programs and events.
    2. Assist with crime prevention initiatives.
  2. Event Support:
    1. Provide logistical support and crowd management during parades, festivals, and other gatherings.
    2. Help with traffic control and pedestrian safety and public events.
  3. Roadwork Safety:
    1. Help with traffic control to ensure safety of roadwork zones, providing a secure environment for both workers and motorists.
  4. Emergency Response:
    1. Provide additional manpower during emergencies or natural disasters, such as assisting with evacuations, distributing supplies, or aiding in other "all hands on deck" efforts.
